Sounds like a restart is in order. The AppleTV is a specialized computer, much like many devices are these days, which benefits from time-to-time by getting rebooted.
If you are still seeing a message on your screen, try pressing the menu button on your remote to get to the main icons page. If your AppleTV is still responding to your commands, try going to the settings menu and looking for General. Under General you can find restart settings at the very bottom of your menu options.

If you still can't see any online content, such as movie trailers, or see a lot of empty boxes onscreen, you may be having a network or internet connection issue. Check to see if you are able to get out to the internet from another device in the house that is on your network. If testing from a smart phone, make sure that you are connected to your home WIFI signal and not the LTE or 3G cell network.
