Help, I can't get texts from iPhones on my new (insert non-Apple brand here) phone

We recently came across this issue, where a former iPhone user was not able to get text messages from iPhones on their replacement android phone. 

The culprit is usually iMessage, but, in this case, they weren't even getting plain text messages. 

Helpful link to Apple article, guides you in recovering from iMessage limbo. If you no longer have your old phone, see the link for submitting a request to Apple for removing old iMessage links from your cell number if you switch to the Android OS.

you should then be able to get text messages from anyone, including iPhone users.
